Exxon Seeks Approval for Massive Canadian LNG Plan

Exxon Seeks Approval for Massive Canadian LNG Plan

ExxonMobil is hoping to get the green light from Canada’s National Energy board to export 30 million tons liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year and build a new export terminal in British Columbia.

This is the biggest export plan ever proposed for Canada’s west coast.

The oil giant has optioned land from the government of British Columbia in a place called Grassy Point, just north of Prince Rupert, and is now seeking approval for the massive LNG terminal project.

The terminal would have six processing units for gas that would come from fields already owned by ExxonMobil and Imperial Oil Ltd, which is the company’s Canadian subsidiary.

If approved, Exxon would export 30 million tons of LNG per year—about one-third of Canada’s overall gas production--over a 25-year period.

Exxon is eyeing 2021-2023 for launch if regulators give it the go-ahead. Initially, the facility would produce between 10 million and 15 million tons of LNG annually, until it reaches full capacity.

UK-based BG Group Plc is also seeking approval from Canadian regulators to export 21.6 million tons of LNG per year from Canada.
